2D game in javascript without Canvas

Okay so i have to develop a video game in JavaScript for one of my classes but the teacher forbid us to use the canvas. I have a good level in html css but barely started learning Javascript. I thought i'd just follow some tutorial and everything would be fine however every tutorial or resources i can find uses the canvas so im having a hard time figuring out how to proceed because i can't find enough resources. So if anyone have a good tutorial for me or have any idea how i could do it i would really appreciate it (It's a 2d game, pixel art, where you explore a map by swiming underwater meaning u can move up and down freely)

What your teacher has assigned you to do is a bad idea from the perspective of building a modern app but an excellent idea from the perspective learning the advanced parts of CSS animations.

If I were you I'd see it as an opportunity to learn advanced CSS animations. Having said that, as someone who is something of an expert in this, I would advise that you should know up front CSS animations are just still very limited.

I know everybody touts how great they are-- and they are better than what came before -- but the sky is not the limit with CSS3 animations.

What it takes is a lot of creativity, learning the CSS3 animation foundation, and frankly a lot of string & glue.

If I were you, I would absolutely tell the teacher that building a game that does what you describe ("explore a map by swimming underwater meaning u can move up and down freely") is not appropriate for CSS3 animations. Can you maybe make something workable? Sure. Will you learn a lot about CSS3 animations? Absolutely.

Will you hit the limits of what you can do with CSS animations and get frustrated? Probably. Is that a good or bad thing? You decide.
