Is there a way to set/remove target attribute for each individual link inside React Quill text editor?

I would like to add a checkbox to link editing tooltip, so that depending on its state a link could change an attribute from _blank to _self

At this point I can't even figure out where to start. I can add a checkbox to the tooltip using vanilla JS but where do I keep its state and more importantly how do I set attributes depending on it
