He estado intentando ejecutar pip3 install mariadb en mi raspberry pi con ubuntu 18.04 y no tuve éxito.

Probablemente necesite instalar los archivos de desarrollo de la base de datos MariaDB: https://packages.debian.org/unstable/libmariadb-dev . Necesita este paquete para que su conector Python funcione correctamente en Linux. Tienes que seguir estos pasos:
sudo apt-get update -ysudo apt-get install -y libmariadb-devpip3 install mariadbAquí primero está actualizando la lista de paquetes que necesitan una actualización para su sistema. Luego, está instalando la biblioteca de desarrollo mencionada anteriormente. El último paso es instalar mariadb con pip3, que ahora debería funcionar como se esperaba.
Parece que no instaló MariaDB Connector/C correctamente, en Ubuntu debería encontrar mariadb_config en /usr/bin.
Tenga en cuenta también que MariaDB Connector/Python requiere MariaDB Connector/C 3.1.5 o posterior, afaik Ubuntu 18.04 proporciona 3.0.3, por lo que la forma más sencilla sería descargar las fuentes de Connector/C y compilarlas manualmente.
En una Mac, primero debe instalar mariadb-connector-c que se puede hacer usando brew :
brew install mariadb-connector-c Luego puedes instalar mysqlclient :
