Cambiar el color del texto seleccionado usando document.execCommand() no proporciona los índices de rango que obtenemos de window.getSelection()

Estoy tratando de cambiar el color del texto seleccionado usando document.execCommand() usando el siguiente código del enlace . El problema es que también necesito obtener los valores de índice de rango del texto seleccionado y este código no proporciona los valores de índice exactos que obtenemos por window.getselection().getRangeAt()
