JS/React app on mobile device: get rid of selection markers and clipboard popup

I am working on a Node/JS/React app for crosswords. If the user enters a square that already contains a character, I want that character to be selected, so he can replace it without having to select or edit first. This works fine on computers but on mobile devices (iOS and some Android versions), selecting the character through code also makes appear selection markers and (sometimes) the clipboard popup menu (cut/copy/paste). I'd like to get rid of those selection markers and popups. I've experimented with callout stuff but that doesn't seem to work in my case. Any help that points me in the right direction is greatly appreciated.
