Why use express() instead of just using require("express") on JavaScript?

When we want to import modules on JavaScript, we use the require function, so we do something like const fs = require("fs"); to import the fs module then we can use the functionality provided by the fs module using the fs app. Now when we use express, why do we need to do const app = express(), when we can just do const app = require("express"); Or am I getting something wrong? Help will be appreciated :)
