What's the proper way to get user data from a cookie that has a session id?

My node.js server stores a cookie on the browser with a session id. I want to be able to access user data on the frontend in React, like a property I have called isLoggedIn.

I've tried to use sessionStorage.getItem("isLoggedIn"); but this returns null, I'm assuming because a) I'm using cookies on the browser and sessions on the backend; and b) because there's only a session id, no property called isLoggedIn on the browser.

How could I get this property? Do I have to make a GET request to the server to query the database for the session?
