JS Disable Button after first clic + Add countdown + localStorage

I have this button that is used to apply for a job.

<a data-toggle="modal" data-target="#applyModal" href="#" onclick="return false;"><button id="apply_online_now" type="button" data-toggle="modal" data-target="#jobpopup" class="btn btn-apply">{$translations.apply.apply_btn}</button></a>

The problem: Anyone can press the button several times and apply several times in less than a minute.

What I need? I would like to have a simple JavaScript code to disable the button once is clicked the first time, and show a countdown to wait 5 minutes if want to apply again. of course, this must be saved in localstorage to avoid people refreshing the page just to click it again right away.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Regards,
