Chrome extension - detect if button on the webpage is clicked

In my "content_scripts" of my Chrome extension, I do have a script that contains

$(document).ready(function() {
 document.getElementByName('buttonName').onclick = function() {
    alert("button was clicked");
 };
});

unfortunately, the alert() is not triggered. Same goes if I run the code above in a background script.

Of course, I have jQuery as well.
