¿Por qué event.preventDefault() no funciona?

Traté de usar event.preventDefault() para evitar que la página se actualice, pero la página aún se actualiza y la alerta no se muestra. Sin embargo, cuando pongo el mismo código en JS Fiddle, el código funciona bien. ¿¿¿Cual es el problema???

 const searchForm = document.getElementById("searchForm"); searchForm.addEventListener('submit', function(event) { var topic = document.getElementById("topicSearch").value; alert(topic); event.preventDefault(); });
 <form id="searchForm"> <input id="topicSearch"> <button type="submit">Search</button> </form>

puedes probar este.

 document.addEventListener('readystatechange', function() { if(document.readyState == 'complete') { const searchForm = document.getElementById("searchForm"); searchForm.addEventListener('submit', function(event) { var topic = document.getElementById("topicSearch").value; alert(topic); event.preventDefault(); }); } })
 <form id="searchForm"> <input id="topicSearch"> <button type="submit">Search</button> </form>
