You could try this: /<([a-z]+.*)>.*<\/\1>/i
const containsHTML = (str) => /<([a-z]+.*)>.*<\/\1>/i.test(str)
console.log(containsHTML('<br>s')) // expect false
console.log(containsHTML('<p>s</p>')) // expect true
