Mismo patrón de expresiones regulares, resultados diferentes

Supongo que estos dos son equivalentes:

 let pattern1 = /\((.?)*\)/g; let pattern2 = new RegExp('\((.?)*\)', 'g');

pero producen resultados diferentes cuando se aplican en la siguiente cadena:

 let str = 'abc(a, b);' let result1 = str.match(pattern1); let result2 = str.match(pattern2);

¿Por qué?
