Me pregunto por qué se llama a doStuff() sin hacer clic.

Estás invocando la función, deberías cambiar

 buttonBox.onclick = doStuff()

a

 buttonBox.onclick = doStuff;

Ahora está pasando la función al controlador sin invocarlo.
