¿Cómo compruebo que mi usuario ya está conectado?

cuando uso este gancho, tiendo a recibir esta advertencia:

Estoy tratando de ver si el cliente de chat tiene algo para verificar si hay una conexión para no tener que llamar constantemente a connectUser .
