React Native apk shows blank on physical device but not on Android emulator

I'm developing an android app using React Native. Until recently I could just create a development build and have the app run on my smartphone, but suddenly now I can only run the app on Android Studio virtual device. If I generate an apk and install it on my cellphone it installs it just fine, I can even see the initial screen, but after passing the initial login screen then I just see a blank screen on my smartphone. If I am using metro to develop the app and have my smartphone connected via USB the app displays just fine after the login screen, but if I disconnect my phone and try to reload the app or install it from scratch that's when I have this problem.

I should add for context that I was fixing a bug that would crash the app and then show just a blank screen, but after fixing it and uninstalling the app from my smartphone and clearing caches and everything I still see the blank screen but only when I'm not using the emulator nor developing with my phone connected via usb. I have also tried on other devices that previously haven't had the app installed on them.

I don't see any error messages or anything crashing on the terminal while developing the app.

Any ideas ?
