cómo guardar el contenido del archivo local usando fetch en javascript

Tengo un archivo text.txt y quiero guardar su contenido en una variable. Mi problema es que puedo log el texto pero no puedo almacenarlo en una var

 let fileText; fetch("./text.txt") .then(response => response.text()) .then(text => fileText = text); console.log(fileText); // undefined

El console.log se ejecutará antes de que se resuelva la promesa de fetch .

Si desea una ejecución de sintaxis línea por línea, puede usar async/await .

 let fileText; (async () => { const response = await fetch("./text.txt") const text = await response.text() fileText = text; console.log(fileText); })()
