How to do Javascript front end to Node.js backend distributed tracing

I have a React based front end application connecting to a Node.js backend. I am trying to understand how to create a span (say parentSpan) from my front end and pass it onto Node.js with the fetch call, so that all Node.js spans created in this workflow become child spans of parentSpan

I have consulted sample programs on opentelemetry javascript page, but am unable to get a basic working prototype of a basic end to end distributed trace.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
