Estoy tratando de poner una etiqueta html dentro de un span para darle estilo a una palabra determinada. pero da como resultado un texto sin formato.

expectativa:

abc Y xyz

lo que obtengo en su lugar:

abc <strong>AND</strong> xyz

Un problema con su enfoque es que hay varios nodos DOM adyacentes. Puedes envolverlos usando un fragmento:
