¿Cómo es `x = 42; x = lambda: x` analizado?

Me sorprendió que esta afirmación falla:

 x = 42 x = lambda: x assert x() == 42

Parece que x termina recursivamente refiriéndose a sí mismo, por lo que x() , x()() , etc. son todas funciones.

¿Cuál es la regla utilizada para analizar esto y dónde está documentado?

Por cierto (no inesperadamente dado lo anterior), el valor original de x no tiene referencias después de la definición lambda:

 class X: def __del__(self): print('deleting') x = X() x = lambda: x # 'deleting' is printed here
