Socket IO: handle 403 on client side

I have a socket.io connection on my client. We have a third-party WAF and after a while (session expired) it will block all request and send 403.

I need to detect the 403 error and react accordingly. How can I detect the 403 error in socket.io? I know I can detect connection errors but I need to be sure it's a 403 error and not something else...

Edit:

What I am doing now, is listening for socket error and when an error occurs I will do a simple HTTP GET request in order to check if it's a 403 or not. Not very elegant but it works
