No se puede agregar un elemento HTML dentro de una función

Estaba tratando de crear algo como una terminal, y decidí hacer una función de inicio para crear la "terminal", pero me dio un error:

TypeError no detectado: terminal.appendChild no es una función en initTerminal

aquí está mi código:
