¿Cómo evitar que el formulario HTML devuelva un valor indefinido en JavaScript?

Quiero recuperar el valor de entrada de un formulario HTML, pero la variable solo devuelve indefinido cuando está fuera de una función.

Aquí está mi HTML:

 <form name="form"> Enter name: <input type="text" id="answer"> <input type="button" value="Submit" onclick="answerInput()"> </form>

Y aquí está el JS que lo acompaña:

 function answerInput() { username = document.getElementById("answer").value } console.log(username)

Cuando la instrucción console.log(username) está dentro de la función, devuelve la entrada; sin embargo, cuando la instrucción console.log(username) está fuera de la función, devuelve undefined.

Debe llamar a console.log dentro de su función.

 function answerInput() { username = document.getElementById("answer").value; console.log(username) }
