How to setState using data received from a graphQL endpoint in a class based component

I am making a call to a graphQL endpoint and i need to use the response to set state in my class based component. So far, the code i have written compiles but gives me an error in the browser console which reads "Uncaught (in promise) TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'setState')". I have tried defining this.setState in it's own function but I am still getting the same error.

Here is my code

constructor()
{
    super()
    this.state = {
      categories:[]
    }
}

    async fetchQuery() {
    const result = await client.query({
      query: getCategories,
    });
    console.log(result)
    this.setState({
      categories: [...result.data.categories]
    });
  }

Does anyone know what could be wrong?
