affect style of an iFrame displaying a directory (same-origin)

I'm loading a folder of same-origin files in an iFrame, like so:

<iframe src="public_assets/"></iframe>

This displays with a serif font, white background, etc.

I'd like to affect the styling of the directory page, using any of HTML, CSS, or JS. Is this possible?

As a minimal example, I've tried

<!DOCTYPE html>

<head></head>
<style>
    iframe {
        font-family: sans-serif;
    }
</style>
<body>
    <iframe src="public_assets/"></iframe>
</body>
<script>
    window.frames[0].style.fontFamily = 'sans-serif'
</script>
