¿Hay alguna forma de llevar una variable de JS a PHP?

Me pregunto si hay una forma de traer una variable de JS a PHP. Tengo que crear la variable en JS, solo quiero saber si hay una manera de llevarla a PHP. HTML:

 <form id="form" onsubmit="return false;"> <input class="mainwrite" id="userInput"> <input type="submit" onclick="save()"> </form>

JS:

 function save() { var input = document.getElementById("userInput").value; alert(input); }

Quiero tomar la variable de input y agregarla a un archivo PHP como una cadena.
