How to store data for my Chrome Extension

I want to store my data for my Chrome extension but I don't know how. I used the code below to store in my App component, but I get an error saying "Cannot find name 'chrome'". What do I need to add to my project so my code can use chrome?

 useEffect(() => {
    chrome.storage.sync.set({ key: value }, function () {
      console.log("Value is set to " + value);
    });

    chrome.storage.sync.get(["key"], function (result) {
      console.log("Value currently is " + result.key);
    });
