javascript: content of variable not changed

I have a code for checking if the email already exists using mongoose. Inside the countDocuments, it is displaying true, while on outside of it it is displaying false.

    let emailError = false;

    // Unique Email
    Visitor.countDocuments({email}, (err, count) => {
        if(count>0){
            emailError = true;
            // Displaying true
            console.log(emailError);
        }
    });
    // Displaying false
    console.log(emailError);

I think I have problem with the scope and the way I access the variable, but I don't know the exact problem and way to solve it.
