React testing library test fails on imported css file

This is a test file for the App component:

import { render } from '@testing-library/react';
import App from './App';

describe('App', () => {
  it('should render App successfully', () => {
    const { container } = render(<App />);
    expect(container).toBeInTheDocument();
  });
});

When it is run, it fails with the following message:

 SyntaxError: Unexpected token '.'
      1 | import React from 'react';
      2 | import ListItem from '@material-ui/core/ListItem';
    > 3 | import './currency.css';
        | ^
