Is there an existing function or method to prevent this: ReferenceError: "[NAME]" is not defined

Is there an existing JavaScript function or method that prevents reference errors? I am working in Mirth Connect, a tool running the Rhino JS engine. It receives messages and breaks content into an object's properties. I need to grab a property without knowing if it is defined.

Currently, I avoid errors by using try/catch:

Adding that each time is a pain. Is there a function or method available in JS5-JS6 that I can use instead?
